Speed Test - Are you EvenFaster?

Javascript Speed test (Blueyonder)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE :

Note : The connection speed calculated here is based upon the size of the download files (12Mb or 18Mb), divided by the time difference between when each file was requested and when that file finished downloading. This method of determination is not perfect, it is affected by many things including other programs (or people!) using your connection, load on the PWP server, proxy servers and browser caches.

For best results : restart your PC, disable any proxy settings in your browser, clear the browser cache, close down all other programs (including MSN and other chat programs that may automatically start when you boot up) and make sure there is nobody else using your internet connection (if you're on a network) before visiting this page.

The image : The image used is a totally random PNG image. The random nature of the data defeats the PNG compression (and all other compression schemes) which would otherwise skew the test by reducing the amount of data downloaded.

The different tests : Both tests now download multiple images at once to improve the test accuracy. Consensus is that three images gives the best accuracy, however web browsers normally only allow 2 images to be downloaded from any single server at one time. This can be changed in Firefox, unfortunately there is no way to change this for Internet Explorer which is why there are two versions of the test.

To Modify Firefox for the 3-image test : In the address bar, enter about:config and hit return. Scroll down the list of entries till you see entries for 'network.http.max-connections' and 'network.http.max-connections-per-server' Change both of these to at least 4. Also change 'network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server' to 4 and 'network.http.pipelining' to true. This is recommended for experienced Firefox users only. Other should simply use the 2 image test.
